City of Sun Prairie Orfan Park - Native Landscape and Wetland Mitigation
Project Highlights
- Integrated Native Plant Communities throughout City Park
- Successfully Fulfilled Wetland Mitigation Requirements through Wetland Restoration, Enhancement, and Creation
Summary
NRC and NRC Restorations (NRCR) worked with the City of Sun Prairie Parks Department and the residential developer to develop a native landscape plan to add aesthetic, recreational, and ecological value to Orfan Park, as well as fulfill regulatory wetland mitigation requirements associated with the residential design. The landscape plan included elements of short grass prairie, no-mow fescue, sedge meadow, and lowland wetland forest restoration. Stormwater conveyance and detention basins were also specified with native prairie and wetland communities.
NRCR completed installation of all native landscape components, including installing several hundred native wetland trees. NRCR continues to perform active management within the Park to assure the long-term success of the native restoration project.
NRCR coordinated closely with the City of Sun Prairie to develop management strategies allowing the Parks Department to assist with specific management operations such as management mowing. This resulted in significant cost savings for the City without jeopardizing the success of the native landscaping.
